What is the beep test?
The beep test, also known as the multistage fitness test, bleep test, pacer test, or shuttle run test, is a standardized assessment used by professionals to measure cardiovascular endurance. It involves running back and forth over a 20-meter distance (approximately 6.5 to 7.4 feet) at a pace that increases progressively as indicated by audio beeps. The level of fitness is determined by how long an individual can maintain the required pace. Visual cues and audio signals mark stage changes throughout the test. This assessment is widely utilized by sporting teams—including soccer, football, Australian Rules AFL, hockey, rugby, cricket, athletics, and tennis—and serves as an entry requirement for police forces, fire services, emergency response units, military branches including Army, Air Force, and Navy.
